St. Ambrose

Bishop and Doctor

Ambrose was born into an aristocratic Roman family during the Fourth Century. His father was praetorian prefect of Gaul. He was trained in law and eventually was made governor of Liguria in northern Italy based out of Milan.

He was chosen by acclaim as bishop of Milan during a period of conflict with Arian Christians.

Ambrose’s writing and preaching had great effect on Augustine culminating in the baptism of Ambrose.
